Railroad Brochures

Eastern Railroad

The Eastern Railroad was an early competitor to the mighty Boston & Maine. Below is the earliest brochure in this photo gallery, dated 1870.

Boston, Concord & Montreal Railroad

The Boston, Concord & Montreal railroad was the first railroad to reach Weirs Beach. It lasted 40 years. It was incorporated in 1844, and lasted until 1884, when it was bought out by the Boston & Lowell. Very little print materials have survived. Below are the only two BC&M brochures in the webmaster’s collection, from 1878 and 1882.

Boston & Lowell Railroad

The Boston & Lowell railroad operated from 1835-1887. It had a very short time serving Weirs Beach, only 4 seasons, beginning with its purchase of the BC&M railroad early in 1884, and ending after its own takeover by the Boston & Maine late in 1887. However, during that short period it produced very elaborate booklets promoting its service. Four of those are seen below. The cover artwork of its 1887 booklet, “Winnipesaukee and About There”, shows the Lady of the Lake steamer approaching Weirs Beach.

Concord & Montreal Railroad

The Concord & Montreal railroad was formed in late 1899 by a merger of the BC&M, which earlier in 1899 had escaped its lease to the B&L, and the Concord railroad. The new railroad lasted as an independent entity only until 1895, when it was taken over by the Boston & Maine. During those five years of independence it produced many printed materials, seen below.

Boston & Maine Railroad

The Boston & Maine railroad was not only the largest railroad ever seen in New England, it also produced more brochures than any other. Below is a photo gallery of Boston & Maine brochures dating from 1871 to 1930.
