Historical Scenic Views from Locke’s Hill

Historical Scenic Views from Locke’s Hill. Views from, and of, Kimball’s Castle. Kimball’s Castle did not stand on the top of Locke’s Hill, but rather, on a lower knob.

On August 27, 2025, an extensive fire gutted the castle, which had fallen into a state of severe disrepair after having remained uninhabited since 1960 and vandalized numerous times. While the stone walls were left standing, the fire department declared the remains hazardous, and ordered the castle to be torn down. Aerial photo by Bill Hemmell, taken in 2014. Fire photo by Gilford Firefighters Local 3517.

A contemporary view of Lake Winnipesaukee from the top of Locke’s Hill, taken on September 10, 2025. Mt. Washington is visible in the far distance.
