Barton’s
George Barton originally built the OxBow Cabins here, at #1330 Union Avenue, in 1937. After renaming the place after himself, Barton added a swiming pool, motel, and antique shop. The antique shop was occupied by Annie’s Book Stop from 1983-2020. In December, 2020, the entire property was torn down for a condo development, Lakeside at Paugus Bay.
Barton’s Village on Paugus Bay, late 1950s. The resort had 30 cottages and a private beach. Notice the shuffleboard court front and center.
Historic Accommodations on Weirs Boulevard
In the 1950s-1960s, there were many more places to stay on Weirs Boulevard than there are today. Most of those one-time motels and cottage colonies have been converted to condominiums. Some have retained the original buildings. Others were torn down and replaced by entirely new construction of multi-family condominium complexes.
Below is a gallery of photos of the historic accommodations on Weirs Boulevard that no longer exist. Not included in the gallery are photos of Christmas Island and the Little Cape Codders, which have their own pages on this website.
