The Annex/Good Luck House

The “Annex” was an entirely separate hotel, previously known as the Good Luck House, that was apparently taken over by D.B. Story. A 1902 Sanborn Fire Insurance map pinpoints the location of the Annex/Good Luck House. The Annex sat just behind Story’s Tavern, higher up the hill and directly adjacent to Veterans Avenue.

Cawley’s

In 1921, the ownership and name of Story’s hotel was changed to Cawley’s. Owner Alice Cawley had come to Weirs Beach in 1909 to work for David Story, the owner of Story’s Tavern. A gallery of Cawley’s images from the 1920s and 1930s. Cawley was quite the cook and delighted in feeding her guests.

The Carroll Arms

In late October, 1937, Alice Cawley, at age 67 years old,  sold the hotel to Lillian B. Carroll, who renamed the hotel the Carroll Arms. No pictures or additional info is currently available regarding the Carroll Arms. In late July, 1940, Lillian Carroll opened another hotel nearby, the Plantation House, which she continued to operate until 1954. Cawley continued cooking at her restaurant at 306 Lakeside Ave until at least 1950, when she was 80 years old.

The Weirs Hotel

Apparently, running two hotels was too much for Carroll, so after the 1944 season, Carroll sold the Carroll Arms. The new owner was Ralph Poudrier, who changed the name of the hotel once again, this time to the Weirs Hotel. The renamed, 33-room Weirs Hotel opened on May 30, 1945. Below is a gallery of images of the Weirs Hotel. The cocktail lounge was named the “Palm Room”.
