The engraving below is from an 1855 issue of Ballou’s Pictorial magazine. It has been colorized, but the original was not. The engraving depicts fishing at the Weirs Channel as it was practiced before and after white settlement of the area. Before settlement, there was a short waterfall at the Channel. A native is depicted spearing fish, while a squaw prepares a fish to be smoked for winter storage at the village above the waterfall. After settlement, a settler fishes with a simple rod and line, while behind him a mill draws power from a water wheel. Above the fishing scenes are the lake and mountains. Drawn five years prior to the Civil War, the sentiment of the North side in the upcoming conflict,”In Union Our Strength”, is expressed in the New Hampshire state seal in the middle of the engraving. This was one of the many early attempts to codify a NH state seal, which varied considerably until 1931.
