Dear Student:
Thank you for your interest in applying for employment during the summer of 2020. We are located in Weirs Beach (a suburb of Laconia) in the central part of New Hampshire, 100 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. We are a resort on Lake Winnipesaukee, open from May through October only.
Our resort consists of: a sixteen-unit motel and twenty cottages; two large amusement arcades (with skeeball, video games, pinballs, photo booths, etc); a pizza stand; an Italian-American restaurant; an ice cream stand; a gift shop and jewelry store; a bumper car ride, and two car parks.
We employ about 50 people overall. About 20 of our employees are foreign students, and the rest are Americans from the local area.
Students may work as arcade attendants, bumper car attendants, car park attendants, cashiers, counter persons, cooks, dough persons, kitchen assistants, groundskeepers, housekeepers, poolkeepers, ice cream scoopers, sales clerks, stock clerks, hosts or hostesses, waiters or waitresses.
Students will not work all the time at the same job; rather, they will be trained and will work in several of the different businesses over the course of their summer employment.
Students are scheduled for a 7 to11 hour day, six days a week, for a weekly average total of 55 hours. Typically, in June and late August, students will work less than the average; while in July and early August, students will work more than the average.
The assignments and hours scheduled vary from week to week. For example, one or two days as a cashier or arcade attendant, one or two days as a counter person or kitchen assistant in the pizza stand, and one or two days as a housekeeper or car park attendant.
Sometimes students work the day shift, and sometimes the night shift, as we are open from 9 a.m. to midnight. Usually, students will work a split shift, with a short, 3-to-5 hour shift in one business, and a longer, 6-to-8 hour shift in another business, with a 1-to-2 hour break in-between.
The wage is $9 an hourtips depend upon the position scheduled.
Accommodations for our foreign student employees are in Clyde House, a lodging house across the street from the beach. The house has a shared living room with a cable color TV, wireless internet, and a large porch with a view of the lake. It is less than a 5 minute walk from the house to the business. Students share a room with one or two other students.
The cost of accommodations at Clyde House is a total of $91.56 per week ($84 rent per week, plus $7.56 tax). The rent will be deducted from the student's weekly paycheck. However, if the student has not stayed at the house for a full week, the rent will be pro-rated at $13.08 per day ($12 rent per day, plus $1.08 tax).
A security deposit of $100, in cash, is required, and will be due on July 1, 2020. Students must leave their room clean and return their room key. Common areas of the house must be left clean, or the student will forfeit their entire deposit.
Students eat for free when they are at work at our Italian restaurant, pizza stand, or ice cream stand. When they are NOT working at the restaurant, pizza stand, or ice cream stand, they do NOT eat for free. Students NOT eating free get a 50% discount on food, or they can prepare their own meals at Clyde House, which has a shared kitchen with a dining area..
We prefer our students to arrive in Weirs Beach between Thursday, May 21, 2020, and Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Most of the students that we hire will arrive during the first week in June. Students start work one or two days after their arrival in Weirs Beach.
We will hire a few students to start later than the preferred starting time. Students who wish to arrive later can arrive between Monday, June 22, 2020, and Friday, June 26, 2020.
We may make an exception to the above arrival dates, but it is not our preference. However, students definitely may NOT arrive in Weirs Beach between Thursday, June 18, 2020, and Sunday, June 21, 2020! We are extremely busy at that time with "Motorcycle Week", and cannot take the time to meet, or orientate, or train any students.
For most students, the last day of work will be on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. These students may depart Weirs Beach on Thursday, September 10, 2020. For those students who need to return to school earlier than usual, the earliest day to finish working would be Sunday, August 30, 2020. For those students who wished to work as late as possible, the last day of work would be Sunday, September 20, 2020.
If the work agreement for the season is completed, a bonus of $300 will be paid to the student.
Students may have up to six days of unpaid vacation. Student vacations are optional; they are not required. Many students choose to forego their vacations so they can continue working and earning money. However, if students wish to take a vacation, they may choose to vacation either between Monday, August 24, 2020, to Saturday, August 29, 2020; or between Sunday, August 30, 2020, to Friday, September 4, 2020. The latter week is much preferred for student vacations, as business is very slow at that time, and students would normally receive reduced hours during that week anyways. In either case, time off during these two weeks must be cleared with management, as we cannot have too many employees off at the same time. Emergency time off can also be arranged.
We have employed help from abroad since the 1980's. Over the years, we have had students from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Taiwan, Turkey, Russia, China, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, and other countries. Sponsoring organizations have included CIEE, CCUSA, ICEO, SPIRIT, InterExchange, CCI, Geovisions, and other organizations.
A J-1 working permit is mandatory. To apply for summer employment, please e-mail us at halfmoonjobs@weirsbeach.com.
